Bio
Recently accepted to Lancaster University's Creative Writing PHD program (UK). I am doing things I never thought I would--not moving internationally--but asking people for money. My days are filled with being a mom, writing, teaching, living. By night I am my biggest fund raising advocate; completing scholarship entries to scholarships I'm not even sure are real; researching charities that fund education; and inquiring about resources and then asking for them. 40 really is liberating. Yvonne Battle-Felton is a graduate of Johns Hopkins MA in Writing program and a full-time-part-time instructor of English and Creative Writing at CCBC, AACC and UMUC. She resides in Maryland where she is in a perpetual state of shock over the intimacy of her personal essays and seriously considering pseudonyms.

If Daughters Came With Directions

Rate: 2 Flag

I worry I don’t know how to parent a 15 year-old young woman.

I have been one.  I have known some.  But now that I’m raising one, it all seems different.

When I was 15, I was in to boys—well, young men and their bourgeoning attentions.  My friend—and since she’s a married, mother of three, I will not name her—and I strolled the Atlantic City boardwalk from one end to the other in attempts to capture their attention and hold it for as long as our fleeting moments of interest could allow.

My mother—I think—thought we were exercising. Seasons before she had accused my sister and me of being ‘boy crazy.’

I wasn’t yet.

By the time I could have been positively diagnosed as boy crazy, my mother was ready to move to Germany—alone.

Today, I parent a 15 year old with no road map, no directions, with nothing but common sense, love, and my memories of wanting to be mothered at 15 to guide me.

Your heart is your roadmap.r.
Common sense, love, and memories of being 15 yourself seems like a good recipe. You will do wonderfully =)
Looks like you answered your own question since you remember so well how you felt at that age. A lot of babes don't and it doesn't help them in these situations. Be glad you have the chance to do for your daughter what your mom wasn't doing for you.
@hugs,me Thank you, I follow it wherever I go--when I'm not busy following my head which doesn't always lead me in the right direction, smiles.

@Lea Prestamo Thank you

@totalcreep I am thankful, thank you for the reminder, smiles.
