In a new article for GQ, series creator Aaron Sorkin deconstructs the famous "meltdown" scene which we've seen in the various promos, where Jeff Daniels' news anchor Will Mcavoy unleashes a Network-esque assault on our media, our politics, and our culture. Using a musical metaphor, Sorkin explains how he's able to create such riveting moments of primo speechifying, and how we can do it too:
A song in a musical works best when a character has to sing — when words won't do the trick anymore. The same idea applies to a long speech in a play or a movie or on television.
