Without a Shirt on Craigslist

Rate: 15 Flag

My Dad used to sing a little ditty that he put on the end of any song.

  "......................without a shirt."

When you put it on the end of  'Mary had a Little Lamb'  it sounds funny.

He used to put it on the end of an old song that went something like this...

".....watching all the girls go by.......without a shirt."

That was my first introduction to something a little risque.  Today Congressman Lee is in trouble over a picture he sent thru Craigslist to a woman that showed he wasn't wearing a shirt and could flex his muscles.   I am reminded that things are a lot different than when my Dad sang his funny little song in the 1950's.

I'm not sure I want that time in history back.  The fifties were a time of hiding things and yet doing the unspeakable behind everyone's back.  The wife swapping and girly girly talk was rampant but no one brought it up publicly.  The show Mad Men always reminded me of that era when men made comments.  It was all in fun until something terrible happened.  Girls were always being hustled off to homes for vacations and then coming back much thinner.   Abortion was illegal and yet performed in back alleys.  Sex was only for marriage and yet.........

Cruising craigslist isn't entertainment for everyone but for some it is a great escape.  I'm sure Congressman Lee was just having a little fun and saw the call by this woman to prove there were some hot men out there.  He knew he was hot and he proved it.  I guess he pretended to be a divorced man and that is a sign that there might be more to this story but.......  At least it wasn't more graphic than that and believe me there are outrageous photos on Craigslist.  Sure I look.  Why not?

But his little bit of fun has ruined his career and his marriage.  He is so embarassed that he has to go into hiding.  I think it is sad.  I don't usually root for the family values hypocrites but in this case I feel sorry for him.  He was just having a little bit of a ditty.  Can't we play in America? Can't we post a naughty twitter of a little flesh in a photo and not have the entire country come down on us as a moral pervert?   Maybe as the story unfolds we will find there was more going on and this was just the tip of an iceberg.  But maybe it was just a little bit of fun.

Sheesh! A man's career ruined over that?!!

No wonder the whole world looks askance at 'Merikan politics....

.
No, a man who has railed about "family values", most likely DOMA, abortion, and all other sanctimonious bullshit the Family Values crowd scream about, lost his job because he was trolling craigslist for a woman. He started a flirtation, telling the object of his desire that he was A) younger and B) a lobbyist. While on the surface this may seem like nothing more than "boys will boys", it's anything but. When the boy in question is trying to legislate everyone else's rights based on a standard he is unwilling to accept, he deserves to lose his job as self-proclaimed "moral compass". I know a lot of men and women pine for the days of secret trysts and the like, I say, expose the dark underbelly of our supposed ruling class and demand that the live by the same stabdards they'd enforce on the rest of us!!
We love to point fingers, and pretend we are perfect.
Thanks Zanelle. and yes...the first stone...everyone has a skeleton. The trolling aspect, well, just not very smart...with or without a shirt R
Zanelle, it is so puzzling that he would tell the lies to the woman on Craigslist and then use his real name.
You should retitle your post and call it "without a job."
From what I got out of it, it was very little to do with sending of the picture, but the fact that a married politician was trying to get a little action on the side. As a Republican, he's the wrong person to be doing it when that party is looking to appear beyond reproach. I'm not surprised at the results of what happened. Sounds like a really foolish person for doing something he really should have known better to do. I'm wondering if there were marital problems, but even if so, he took the wrong approach and then the wrong response to ever regain any of his leverage, or respect from his party.
Hypocritical and dumb. His constituents should be glad he's gone. Sex is an eye-catcher, but was just the vehicle - for hypocritical and INCREDIBLY DUMB!
Skypixieo - I think in some countries they wouldn't give it a blink.

dvorasnell - It is disgusting that people with an outdated moral compass have to lie and cheat to play around. I like the exposure of the underbelly but I don't want to live by that compass. I want to make my own way and not skulk around.

patrick - This type of thing has happened over and over. Our government officials seem to be held to a higher standard than the rest of us.

a persistent muse - not very smart. yes, he got caught big time. Using his own name and email. geez. It is like the high school class president getting caught in the back of the gym two timing his girlfriend. He may still be a good president and I always thought that kind of thing was the business of the girlfriend. I wonder if the congressman's wife will publicly stand by her man. hmmmm...maybe that is changing too.

Catherine - It is puzzling that someone in this day and age of politics could be so clueless. That is why I think it was just a little bit of fun. Either that or he was in real trouble with some sort of porn addiction and wanted to be caught.

OEsheepdog - Without a job and with a big scarlet letter on his chest. I wonder if he will qualify for unemployment. Ha.

Duane - maybe he will become a Democrat. It usually takes a little more than a shirtless picture to be disgraced on the left. More like an extra baby with a lover.

Myriad - hypocritical and dumb. He sure was! So is playing around on Craigslist just like playing with fire? It can warm you a little bit but it can catch on fire too easily.
Sorry, I am with dvorasnell... Rep. Lee, have a little fun if you are not a public figure, not a hypocrite screaming "family values, sanctity of marriage." Have a little fun if you want to tell a few somehow now acceptable internet lies. But don't have it using your own name, because that same internet provides the means to seek you out, identify you, and hang you out to dry. You promised your family you were honorable. You promised your constituents you had integrity. And you sent your OWN picture and used your OWN name. I guess you never promised anyone you were intelligent.
No one is perfect.. he just did not have a good aide to cover.. ahh cover..:) this all up
rated with hugs
Keep in mind that as soon as this was posted, he quit. He resigned his job before anyone could ask him about it. So, he not only knows he did some seriously wrong stuff (versus stupid) but that there is likely more to be found. It rarely happens the first time out. Wait, maybe I'll take that back. He used his home email to contact her. Then he claimed someone had hacked his computer. Sounds like a freshman bamboozler.
Satori - I agree that he needed to get caught if indeed he was lying and cheating. But it seems to me the family values are a little tight. They are hard to uphold and maybe we need to take a look at them more closely if people are constantly stepping over the boundaries. And it doesn't matter to me if he was a public figure or not. We should all be held to the same standards. A shirtless photo is not a human rights violation.

Linda - That is what I hate. The cover ups. So much goes on that we need to get out in the open. If showing your bare chest on the internet is so bad that it needs a special aide to cover up the fiasco we are in a heap of trouble.

Oryoki - If someone had hacked his computer it shows how vulnerable we have all become because of our Victorian morals. Anyone can get in trouble at the drop of a hat for small things that can ruin lives and careers. It will be interesting to see how it all develops. Either way he is gone. I wonder what he will do next?
I'm happy to see a Republican go no matter how trivial the offense.
Very interesting...I did not know about this...But I will tell you that when my friend got a "wink"from a man on Match.com without his shirt flexing his muscles...we did have a giggle.
John, I agree with you!

Snarky, It is fun! and funny!
Although I agree that he is completely stupid for using his email...was it rep.lee@congress.gov?...this hardly seems a reason for resignation. I suspect there is more to this story that will emerge later.
