My Daughters Have Traveled

Rate: 17 Flag

They went together to Bangkok, Laos and Cambodia.  The older one went to Costa Rica to study Spanish and then all the way up the coast with her boyfriend through El Salvador to Guatemala and back to Costa Rica to spend a month there on the beach with their friends.

She also went to Paris, Spain, Switzerland, Rome and London.   Then she had a baby, Petunia, and she was on nine planes her first year.   My other daughter has been to New York City the last two years and from Alaska to Wisconsin and hopefully she will be visiting me soon here before she goes back to Alaska.

My mother and father traveled all around the world and then took their airstream trailer to the four corners of the United States.   They visited me up in remote Alaska and made their way to Barrow for the final corner of their trip.  We lived in Seattle, Hawaii and Guam and took frequent trips to Hong Kong and the Philipines.   We went to Toyko a few times and took the bullet train out to see the big Buddha.  My Dad loved Buddhism.

Petunia is on her way to Portland now.   She had fun in their house in Alaska but now will be in a comfy old house in downtown Portland with their friends.   My daughters' friends travel as much as they do. They are not wealthy but they have a courage and curiosity that is inherent in the young.

I long for a trip.  I think I have one in mind.  And it won't be on a bus trip with my mom.  That is her mode of travel nowdays.   At 93 she has seen it all.  She and I take trips together as much as we can.  Not easy at 93 tho.  My mom came a long way from her humble Indiana upbringing.  She married my Dad who had spent eight years in Brazil building roads after college to bypass the depression.  They loved to travel.   My daughters have the bug now.  They want more.

I too, am thinking of one last great adventure. I have had my share, and a few others, of travel and excitement, but I think I have one more adventure in me, before they throw the dirt on me (I'm really being cremated) I just want to get in a car or van or even a travel trailer and talk to people like I once did when I used to thumb around the country. I miss talking to strangers. There are some very weird and kind people in the world.
Its a wonderful bug to be biten by.

I miss exploring a place I have never been before. I have been here in Southern California for ten years!! Geez. That is plenty. I'm itching to MOVE. I want a place where I can have a big dog and a private yard tho too so I guess I am torn between the stay at home life and the gypsy vagabond life. A tiny vacation adventure is nice but it just doesn't pack the same punch as a big journey.
It sounds like the apples didn't fall far from the tree. Happy trails to you all.
Retirement travel was a casualty of Great Depression II and it is very disappointing. I have done my share, far more than any other member of my family of origin, but there are so many places I wanted to see and haven't.

I have never been one for travel but I envy all of you. GO ZANELLE..
GO..
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
I hope that Portland is on your agenda. It was beautiful when we lived there long ago, and again this summer when I visited my nieces and nephew.
Love the idea of women traveling, at any age, in any way, solo or not. Keep on moving!
I love traveling, but am too broke to travel right now. I will, however, be going to LA on Monday to visit my Dad and stepmother and they kindly paid for the ticket. It's good to get away.
I see you have gifted your wanderlust to the next 2 generations! How cool!
Travel is the tonic of the artistic soul.
This is how it happens. The children of travellers become travellers themselves. The children of xenophobics often become the same. Did you ever see a demographic of where Americans who travel come from? Can you take a guess? Or how many Americans even have passports? If they do travel, the vast majority take pre-arranged tours and cruises. Is it any wonder we know so little about ourselves since we know so little of the world--and are still fighting battles over birth control and health insurance?
I moved a lot when I was younger but as a reluctant gypsy. I earned a wonderful trip to the Island Hawaii almost 20 years ago when I was in sales. It was a real joy to have a week of total relaxation, exploring and doing what I wanted and not having to worry about money.

I used to think I'd get to enjoy traveling when I got older but things don't turn out the way you plan them. Life is what happens when you're busy making plans. It's fun to read about other people's travels and live vicariously through friends. I'm learning to be content with what I have and staying home.
My daughter just called and said she and Petunia are not going to Portland. They are just going to stay "home". Interesting. The nest.
Yes i know quite a few 'travelers'..they come back
with tales of wonder , and of course pictures...how i envy them...
i am home bound, stomping around my town,
making it mine....by residence..
a different choice, i have made.

she has seen it all, your mom? are u sure?..
My husband is the child of travelers and he gave me that wonderful gift. Already planning for my third trip to Cambodia next November.

How cool that you and your mom travel together.
I plan to do weekend jaunts once Puff has passed away. So I am not wishing her gone, just making plans to fill the weekends once she is.
I'm not sure if I'll get to them all but of places I've never seen, the short list would be Prague, Barcelona, Lisbon and wine tours through Burgundy and the Loire Valley. Your daughters are doing it right by traveling when they're young. You never know when you're later going to get tied down by something.
And a great bug to have.
I love to travel. If I win the lottery I will spend the rest of my days doing just that. But for now, we are planning a road trip for this summer up teh California coast and in to Oregon.
....beautiful flower, and name, the Petunia (same spelling in Italian)....I definitely believe it, the travel, to be part of a family's DNA....our travels also go back for at least three generations....
I, too, have travelled a lot. I have seen THIS country. A good portion of it, anyway. I always wished to go see the world, as they say, but have never been able to afford it. Tramp steamers and work passages are things of the past. Hell, it's even pretty difficult to be a hobo these days and ride the rails.

It always made me envious when I got to a new school (18 in 12 years) and I heard some kid saying, "Yeah, we went to Switzerland for Spring Break, but we went there last year." as if it were so boring and droll to go to another country. I also always wondered, "Have they been to the Grand Canyon? Have they seen Yosemite? Have they been to the top of Mt. Shasta? Did they ever go to Mt. Rushmore?" I often asked them. Most of the time, those kids went to other countries with their parents and saw nothing of the country other than whatever mom and dad were doing.

Today, you go to Egypt and instead of sitting in a little bazaar, sipping kafir, sugar lumped into it like a syrup, you can eat at Pizza Hut in sight of the Great Pyramids.

I would still love to travel and I recommend it to anyone. I am envious of you and your daughters, and applaud your travels. You don't strike me as the sort of timid traveler who shies from eating the local quisine or going off the tourist trap trail.

I traveled constantly when I was young and now, as you say, my daughters have the bug. I've got a few places on my bucket list.
