but Hitler was left, so was Mussolini and Stalin. It's our own side that gets the most fucked up from power.

Not that left is inherently bad. I'm a socialist and vote Green or Dem depending on the candidate. However there is only so much a people will put up with from the rich (usually right wing) before a country snaps and has a revolution. We are due for one. It is coming, there is no doubt in my mind. I just hope I survive it with my head intact now that I'm making money.

As much as there is a proportion of bigoted idiots here, they are by no means the majority. I really wouldn't worry so dramatically about it, there is a far lower proportion of right-wing, racist, homophobic idiocy in Britain and Europe compared to, for example, America. It is precisely because of Nazi Germany and the horrors of World War II that we are educated so young about the horrors of racism and general discrimination. There are always going to be those few who ignore the message but as a whole, we fight against discrimination, not for it. We remember the consequences. Honestly, I find your post ignorant.

I agree that that xenophobic hate groups and demagogic politicians of the far Right are something to be aware of. However, I think the democratic spirit is entrenched strongly enough in Western Europe that their appeal will never rise to majority status. The greater danger, I fear, is a return to a more aggressive, revanchist Russia, looking warily at American forces stationed (needlessly IMHO) in what was once the USSR, and at the Chinese phoenix rising across its southeastern border.

I believe the greatest threat that exists in Western Europe is that posed by the ghetto-ization of the African and South Asian population in the large cities, a prime breeding ground for terrorist recruitment. That, of course, feeds the white xenophobic reaction, making for a vicious cycle of violence, but violence that differs from that of the 1930's in that it won't be encouraged or sanctioned by the government.

Yeah -- but buck-up maybe a far left guy, like Stalin, will take over--that'll be nice.
