I will Share Only Once: My classic PB&J Sandwich Recipe

Rate: 19 Flag

In the pursuit of the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I have gone through many types of bread and many versions of peanut butter.  Now, I have perfected the dish into a delight that does not last for long in my household.

Mary Ellen Concord Grape Jelly was the ultimate for making a PB&J sandwich. The concord grape flavor was so intense that it could hold up against any bread and any nut butter.

But the Mary Ellen Jam company was acquired by Smuckers, in 1979. I cannot find the jam in any of my usual stores. A Google search failed to turn up any Mary Ellen Concord Grape Jelly in "stores nearby", indicating that another wonderful classic has disappeared off of the store shelves.

The sandwich begins with Orowheat Health Nut bread, which seems to have been crammed with enough niacin, folate, iron, thiamin and calcium to replace meat.

I freeze this bread, then put the slices in the toaster oven at about 200° for about 5 minutes. This warms and lightly toasts the bread.

Next, goes the peanut butter and only Skippy Roasted Honey Nut Super Chunk will do. There is no substitute. Adding honey crunch peanuts to regular butter is just not the way to go, son.

The warm bread makes the butter spread smoothly and even melt a bit. I keep my peanut butter in the refrigerator, which makes a little heat a very helpful helper.

Then, my lesser substitute for Mary Ellen Concord Grape Jelly, Welch's Concord Grape, goes onto the bread and I mix the jelly and peanut butter together.

The sandwich is cut in half and served with a glass of 1 percent milk. But not just any glass will do. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches milk must be served in the most quirky glassware that is possible.

Suggestions include McDonald's theme glassware, tourist shop finds from various cities of the world, elegant cut glass tumblers and plastic cups that were left over from the Halloween party.

After all that, simply munch and sip, sip and munch, and come close to the gates of Heaven!

I have been waiting for a recipe for this delicious gourmet sandwich!!!!! I loves me some peanut butter and jelly on toast. My husband doesn't get the jelly thing though, he grew up deprived, evidently!!!!!! What a great post!!! Loved the pictures and the glass idea. We used to save jelly jars in the old days an that was how we got some cool glasses.
When I was dating my wife she always used to "make" cheese and crackers when I came over, so I wrote out a fake recipe card and put it in her little box to discover, which she did. Here it is: "Remove crackers from box AND inner cellophane wrapper. Remove cheese from plastic bag, slice. Arrange crackers and cheese on plate, serve immediately."
Con: That is hilarious!!!
The simple things are best. I love Julia Child but in reality this is the kind of instructions I need. Lots of great suggestions. Thank you.
I had this same sandwich for lunch yesterday -- without the chunks, though. If I want chunks I can eat peanuts. Same Welch's grape jelly. Peter Pan Creamy Peanut Butter. Same bread, except here it is labeled Arnold's 100% Whole Wheat. Yum.

Love this. Since there are only three ingredients, each one is of supreme importance. I haven't had a good PB&J in ages, but this sure made me want to make one right away!
Con, you philistine. You miss the beauty of years of refinement...ha ha!
This sounds great, but have you tried replacing the grape jelly for marshmallow creme?
Loved this.
I would, but where would I get my serving of fruit for the day? ha ha!
I love P & J. Just today, I was making a banana sandwich and thought about putting it on Foodie Tuesday. The secret is cutting the banana in circles and make it look like a crop circle. I only use Duke's mayonnaise, but, that's up to the eater~~~
PB&J is my favorite quick meal. Probably the same recipe except I've never seen Orowheat bread around here.

In Greenwich Village, there is a restaurant that serves nothing but sandwiches containing peanut butter. The Village also has a restaurant that serves only mac & cheese. I'm looking for one that serves Spam for the next OS meet-up.
Really? Not Jif? Okay, you sound like you know what you are doing. ~r
Ah, a true classic! I haven't had a PB&J sammich in years, but now I really want one - why ya always gotta do food posts when I'm starvin' over here? :(
I'm a philistine, I admit it. I always preferred peanut butter and strawberry Jam. Or peanut butter and honey.

Great recipe! And as someone else pointed out when there are so few ingredients, each one really matters!

This is so funny and should have an EP. I do prefer strawberry jam though. Otherwise this is perfect and I want one for dinner instead of the planned chicken. -R-
OH MY GAWD!!! PB&J Heaven!! RATED!!
You make the simplest thing sound sooooo appealing and delicious! I didn't even know that peanut butter existed until I was a teenager, because we just didn't have it in Turkey. I'm still not a faithful fan of it, but I do spread it occasionally on my home-made pumpkin-walnut-raisin-bran muffins. No jam, though; raisins are sweet enough for me.

I KNEW that you all would rally to the basics! I am enjoying reading about the individual preferences and those who haven't had the delight for a while.

But banana and mayo...oh my...a little honey...some brandied almonds...aiiee...
aw c'mon. this is too important to share only once! favorite part is about the glasses. ll
As one who has a peanut butter sandwich for lunch 3-4 times a week, to each their own zuma. I prefer the natural, no additives kind from my local market. And served on no additives multigrain with no jam or anything else. Enjoyable post.
This is better than I expected! I thought that this "recipe" would be a bust. Thanks, all.
I've never had PB with J, only with H (honey). These days, watching my carbs, just the occasional PB on some kind of good-for-you-bread.

But, given that PB&J is a classic, maybe I should try it... I don't have any quirky glasses and (gee) don't drink milk, I do have lots of quirky cups and many little packets of strange tea...
mmmm! I'll have to try that. I have two loved versions: low carb wheat bread, generic peanut butter crunchy, and sliced banana; and same bread, same pb, raisins and Ghirardelli 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate Chips (or any dark cc)
What is it about melting peanut butter that just soothes the soul?
Myriad, tea is good with PB&J. That's my alternative when I'm out of milk. I might try some almond milk to see how it does..

Hy: It's just doggone comfort food, I guess. Now I'm hungry...
peanut butter on a warmed piece of flatbread--soft and gooey, it's heaven
Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

The most perfect sandwich, but ya gotta have Bunny Bread. Sometimes if I'm feeling a little randy I'll put a nice little layer of Lay's potato chips in the middle. Makes it a titch more exciting. Oh, and with ice cold whole milk. Screw the calories!
The Perfect Sandwich. But here in the Deep South ya gotta have Bunny Bread. Sometimes if I'm feeling a little randy I'll put a nice little layer of Lay's Potato Chips in the middle. Makes it a titch more exciting. Oh, and you must have ice cold whole milk. Screw the calories! What's few more when that sandwich is the whole day's allotment.
We have sandwich mavens in this world. Thank God we are not alone!
