Sorry about yesterday!

Hello again everyone,

I'm sorry for my absence from OS yesterday!

I was stuck in Connecticut post-Irene without power, water, Internet, trains, or much of a sense of humor.

I'm playing catch-up this morning; thanks very much for your patience, and I hope all fellow East Coast OS-ers made it through the storm all right.

Open Call: Hurricane Irene pictures

If weather reports are to be believed, Hurricane Irene is set to batter the Eastern seaboard this weekend, hitting the Carolinas early Saturday before heading up the coast.

Meteorologists are predicting that this will be the biggest storm to hit the coast in decades. If you're living in one of the areas set to experience it, we'd love to see your photos. (But please -- and most importantly -- stay safe during the hurricane.)

IMPORTANT: To submit your original pictures, post images that are at least 600 x 400 pixels at 72 dpi on your blog by 9AM ET Monday morning. Please also include a little information about where each pair of photos was taken.

Be sure to tag your photos "tracking hurricane irene." We'll feature our favorites on the Monday cover of Open Salon. We may also run a slide show of the best pictures on Salon.

Please note that by tagging your photos "tracking hurricane irene," you're giving us permission to cross-post them (with credit, of course) on Salon.

Hello from your interim editor

Hello everyone,

My colleague, Emily Holleman, is about to set off on vacation -- conveniently escaping the major storm that's headed our way -- and I'll be stepping into her shoes as OS editor for the coming week.

As you can tell from my spartan profile, I haven't posted on OS before. However, I do visit regularly, and I have long admired the wonderful work -- from essays to cartoons -- that you share here every day. I'm excited about exploring OS further between now and Labor Day.

A tiny bit about me: I've been working at Salon since late spring of this year; I write mostly for the culture desk, about everything from inspiring public art programs to fairy tales.

Here's to a great (and not too hurricane-swept) week!
