"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

  Philippians 4-8.

-----------------------------------------------------

Love the quote. The sound of the words. The parallelism and repetition. And could there be any better advice to the scholar?

From the King James, of course. We won't talk about any of those awful "modern" translations that strip all the poetry out. : )

Note: Inspired by RCHanes post of dream quotes.

Anybody have one? Any familiarity with the breed in general? My spouse wants one really bad. At first, we mistook them for English Bulldogs, which are significantly more expensive. Now, we're interested in the "breed" itself, espescially since they are supposed to be much less prone to medical problems than English Bulldogs (did I mention they're cheaper too?). Specifically, we're wondering if one will do well with our cats, our Beagle, and our kids. Thanks.

Tonight, my wife and I began re-watching Foyle’s War. What a great series. Easily worth a second and perhaps even a third viewing. There’s a particular aspect of Foyle’s character I’d like to keep in mind while re-watching the series this time around. In more than one Sherlock Holmes story, we see that Holmes is more interested in justice than he is the law. What about Foyle? Where and when is he willing to compromise? Difficult choices and morale ambiguity having arisen from the particular circumstances of the war are common themes throughout the series, and in the German Woman, Foyle is put to the first of many tests.

Given a choice between abandoning the case, which has uncovered embarrassing and illegal acts by several influential people, including his own superior officer, or taking a position he highly covets, Foyle refuses to give up the case. Subsequent choices aren’t as easy. The murderer turns out to be a member of British intelligence working on war problems that, if solved, may save hundreds and perhaps thousands of lives. Having been backed into a corner, he, the murderer, asks Foyle to consider this bigger picture, to allow him to continue to serve this highly useful purpose rather than simply delivering him to be hanged. From a utilitarian perspective, Foyle recognizes that indeed there is potentially much greater benefit to letting the man remain free. Nevertheless, he concludes rather simply, “I am a police officer, and it is my job to uphold the law.” Very black and white. Still, I can’t help wondering how he has arranged freedom for the German man in the camp. How is it that he is able to pull this off without pulling a few strings, without bending if not breaking the law?

I liked the new Speed Racer movie. The performances were good all around, and Emile Hirsch and Susan Sarandon were especially good. Sure, it got a little long in the tooth, but overall it was fun. The primary colors, funky 60's psychedelic vibe was spot on. What a great demo disk for showing off your home theatre gear. Oh, yeah, and the title track kicks butt. Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go Speed Racer, Go!!!

And speaking of kicking butt, Chocolate was awesome. Who says movies have to be complicated? Sometimes, we (or at least I) just want to see the (clearly identifiable) good guys win. Besides, as far as karate movies go, I would venture that this one is probably a bit more complicated than most. What if Dustin Hoffman's character in Rain Man were a girl with a talent for martial arts instead of math? Sounds like a cool pitch to me. Anyway, I thought it worked and was also a blast. The display of athleticism and martial arts talent alone is worth the viewing.

Jeremy Brett owns the role; there's no denying that. Still, if anyone can pull off a reinterpretation worthy of standing alongside his, it's Robert Downey, Jr. Can't wait to see it.
