How do I change my password?

After logging in, click on the Edit Account link in the upper right-hand corner of your profile page. Simply enter a new password into the appropriate fields, then click Apply Changes.

I have a Salon Letters and/or Premium account. Can I use the same information to log into Open Salon?

If you have an existing Salon account (Letters and/or Premium), you must register for Open Salon before signing in. As a member of one of Salon's existing properties, however, we have saved your personal information for use on Open Salon. When you register, therefore, please use your Letters or Premium username as the Open Salon "Login ID". Then, please use the exact same password that you use for the existing Salon account. I'm having trouble signing up for an account. What do I do?

By clicking, "Join Now", you should be able to register for an Open Salon account. A screen should appear with various fields for you to fill in. Once it is completed, you should click, "Join Now", at which point your account set up will be complete. All of your user privileges can be accessed from the upper, right-hand corner of the Open Salon pages.

Some users may experience difficulty with our registration screen. If you are not able to see it, please go to this page.

What happens if I forget my password?

Go here to reset your password. All passwords are encrypted, so if you forget your password it will be reset and mailed to you. Once you log in you can change it back to whatever you would like.

How do I update my profile?

After logging in, select Edit Account from the menu in the upper right-hand corner of your profile page. You will then be able to update all of the information associated with your account, including what appears on your profile page.

When you are logged into your account, click on Manage Links within the My Links box. You will be taken to a new page, where you will be able to add, remove and edit links.

How do I upload images to my posts?

When you are creating a post, there is a tool bar located within the posting box. In order to upload an image file, select the corresponding icon (small flower). You will then be prompted to upload the file for inclusion in your post.

How do I add a banner image to my profile?

After logging in, click on the Edit Account link in the upper right-hand corner of your profile page. You may then browse for a file within the field Banner Image. This will upload a photo and automatically create your new banner! Make sure to save your banner by clicking Apply Changes.

Are there size restrictions on files I upload?

Yes, there are size restrictions. For images, you may upload up to a 2MB file.

How do I create a post?

After logging in to your account, you will see a variety of user options, located in the top right-hand corner of the screen. You can simply click on post to begin creating a new post.

How do I delete a post?

Once you are logged in, you can select Manage from the box in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. You will then be able to either edit or delete your published posts.

I already have a blog. Is there a simple way I can cross-post it into Open Salon?

You can easily cross-post your current blog into Open Salon by using our import feature. To access the feature, go to the "Edit Account" section in the top-right hand drop-down menu, and click on "Import". You'll be prompted to enter the feed URL associated with your blog. You will also be given the option to import all or just a few of your posts, import them as drafts, and customize their assigned dates. Your future posts will then automatically be published on Open Salon. Note: Open Salon only supports valid full-text RSS 2.0 and Atom 1.0 feeds. We can not guarantee that other formats -- including photo feeds -- will import without errors.

How do I stop importing my outside blog into Open Salon?

To stop importing your feed, access your "Edit Account" options via the top-right-hand corner drop-down menu. Once there, click on "Manage Feeds" on the left-hand side, where you have the option of deleting your feeds.

Open Salon is only importing part of my post. Why?

Open Salon supports full text feeds only. The type of feed produced by a blog is determined by its platform provider. Most will give you the option of having a full or partial text feed. Please refer to the documentation provided to you by your chosen platform. In addition, Open Salon strips html from RSS feeds except for very simple formatting tags. Currently embedded video tags are not supported for blog imports.

Can I edit posts that I import from another blog?

All imported posts can be edited like Open Salon posts. To edit your posts, select "Manage Posts" in the top-right-hand-corner drop-down menu.

How do I add friends to my profile?

You can add friends by clicking Add as a Friend on a user's profile page. Your friends will then appear on your profile page. Your friends' recent posts will also appear on your profile page.

Please visit the Open Salon "People" page, where you can search for members by name, or simply scroll through all members of Open Salon. In addition, the Open Salon site search will allow you to search for members by name.

How do I invite a friend to Open Salon?

To invite a friend to Open Salon, click on the "Invite friends" links spread throughout the site. The link appears at the top of the "People" page, in the "My friends" module on your blog page, and in the "More" drop-down menu on the top right-hand corner of every page. Simply fill out your friend's e-mail address and name, and add a personal message if you'd like, and an e-mail will be sent inviting him or her to Open Salon.

How do I search for members in my area?

We are working on a search function that will let you find Open members who might be posting about local issues of interest to you. Stay tuned.

How do I search for content?

Located at the top of every screen within Open Salon, you will find a search box. The search defaults to find all of the following: posts, people and tags. You can refine your results by selecting to search only within any of these areas. In addition, you can sort your results by date or relevance. Like many other search engines, Open Salon search will take into account all keywords that you enter.

How do I embed HTML in my posts?

When you create a new post and want to embed HTML code for a video, picture or other item, please click the button labeled HTML on the tool bar within the posting screen. A new window will pop up, allowing you to paste the HTML code within that window. Clicking "update" will add this code to your post.

What name will appear on my profile?

The name that appears on your profile will be either your login name, or your real name, depending on what you choose to appear during the registration process. If you prefer that your real name never appear on your profile, or anywhere within Open Salon, please select your login name to appear, when you are given the option.

How do I comment on a post?

You must be logged in and registered to comment. If you have not registered, you will be prompted to do so. Once you are logged in to your account, you may simply click on Comments to view or add your own comment.

How do I delete comments?

You may delete comments that have been made in response to your posts. Please select "Edit Account" from the "More" drop-down menu, in the upper, right-hand corner of all Open Salon pages. Once there, select "Manage Comments". You will be presented with a list of all comments made on all blog posts that you have written. By clicking the "delete" button you will permanently delete the corresponding comment.

How do I disable comments on my blog?

To turn off comments on a blog post, click the box labeled "Turn comments off" at the bottom of the screen when you create a new post. To turn comments off after you've published a post, go to "Manage posts" in the top right-hand corner drop-down menu, select to "Edit" that post, and check "Turn comments off."

Can everyone see the information I put in my profile?

Yes. Everyone, regardless of whether they are members, can see the information you put in your profile, along with all of the content you choose to publish in your blog. It is therefore important to include only the information that you would like to be made public.

What does it mean to "Rate" a post?

All user posts are accompanied by an option to Rate that post. This is a way for the Open Salon community to help promote content, based on user response. Users will find that a small icon indicating a "thumbs up" appears within each post. Any reader may rate the post once, by clicking the thumbs up (indicating a favorable rating). All ratings help the Open Salon editors to determine the quality of the content. We appreciate your participation!

If I remove friends, are they notified?

No. We do not tell users when they have been removed from friends lists.

What does "Top Rated" mean?

The Top Rated posts are all posts that have received the highest ratings within the previous 48 hours, unless otherwise noted. If several posts have received the same number of ratings, then those posts are ranked giving preference to the most recent post.

What does the "Editor's Pick" mean?

Open Salon combines member-generated content with editorial oversight. Having our experienced editors curate the home page ensures quality and credibility. For this reason, editors are able to select user posts as Editor's Picks.

Do Open Salon editors monitor the site on weekends?

Editors check in on the site on Saturdays and Sundays, but will only sporadically be selecting Editor's Picks or updating the cover. If you want editors to see and promote your post (with an Editor's Pick, an Open Salon cover spot, or space on Salon itself), the best time to publish is Monday through Friday (until about 5 p.m., EST).

How does the activity feed work?

The activity feed updates every 5 minutes with all of the latest community activities: posting, commenting, joining, and rating. If you have performed multiple activities within that time, you will only be listed once, for your most recent activity. We do this to ensure that our members are equally represented within the feed."

How are the posts selected for the Open Salon home page or on

Every day Open Salon's editors select among the Editor's Picks to build a smart, fun and entertaining home page. Content selected to be a good match for may be spotlighted there as well.

I found content that is offensive. What do I do?

If you find content that you believe to be inappropriate and/or offensive, we ask that you alert the staff by "flagging" the post. You can do this by clicking the "Flag" button that is located at the bottom of every blog post (it is located within the "Rate" section). This will automatically send the URL to the editorial staff of Open Salon, who will evaluate the content.

How does Salon filter spam?

We've added a more sophisticated spam filter to the in-site messaging system. It's been trained over the past few months to recognize the unsolicited commercial emails that invariably make it into any system, no matter what we've done to keep them out. We're hopeful that it will make a big difference.

Here's how it works:

  1. You now have a Spam folder in your Inbox. It will place all messages it believes to be spam into that folder -- but you can go in and check, too, if you're worried that a message from a friend might've been incorrectly filtered.
  2. You can mark as "spam" messages that come into your Inbox if they are, in fact, not messages you want. The more you do this, the smarter, and more restrictive, your filter becomes.
  3. You can also go into the spam folder and mark a message as not spam.

Important: When you do either of the two steps above (No. 2 or No. 3), you are training your spam filter to follow your lead. If you mark legitimate messages as spam, you run the risk of training your filter to withhold messages you might want to see. Conversely, if you mark as not spam messages that are actually from someone offering get-rich-quick schemes or offering true love, you will continue to probably get them, unfiltered in your inbox.

Why did my older post disappear from the "Most Recent Posts" feed and "New Posts" cover module?

Only your latest post appears in the "Most Recent Posts" feed and "New Posts" module. This avoids bloggers who use Open Salon's Import function from "clogging" up the feed and module when they import a large number of posts. To avoid missing another blogger's posts, make him or her a Favorite (on the top left-hand corner of every post and blog page). You can see all of your Favorites' posts (both new and old), by selecting to "Show Favorites" in the "Most Recent Posts" feed.

What is the Open Call?

The Open Call is a question or call to action that periodically appears on the top right-hand corner of the Open Salon cover page. Open Salon's editorial staff uses the Open Call to solicit contributor opinions on breaking news or other salient topics. To respond to the Open Call, you can click the link "Respond with a post" in the Open Call box or simply tag your response post with "opencall." You can also view other users' responses by clicking "View all responses" in the Open Call box.

Can I send messages to other users?

You can send messages to other users by clicking "Send Message" on any user profile, or from the People search page. You can also send messages by going to your "Inbox" (located within the "More" drop-down menu, in the upper right-hand corner of every Open Salon page).

How can I tell when I have received a message?

You are automatically alerted by e-mail when you receive a message on Open Salon. (To change your e-mail settings go to the drop-down "More" menu, look in the "Edit Account" section, and under "Email me when. . . ".) The "Inbox" link located within the drop-down "More" menu, will also tell you if you have messages (the number of messages will appear within parentheses next to the "Inbox" link).

What is Tippem?

How do I send and receive tips?

Open Salon and Revolution Money Exchange have partnered to provide an easy and secure method for our users to send tips to each other online. Creating an account is free and easy. Do my tips expire?

Yes. You must accept your tips within 30 days, or they will revert back to the sender. Read More click here.

Can I automatically receive my tips?

Yes, you can choose to automatically accept tips from users who send them to you. To do so, you will need to login in to your account within Revolution Money Exchange and disable the negotiation feature within the "My Account" section. For more information, click here.

Why does Tippem registration require my social security number?

Revolution MoneyExchange requires your social security number, as required by law, and as a way to protect your financial information. Please visit the Revolution MoneyExchange site for more information.

How do I view my account balance?

Members may access information pertaining to their Tippem activity within Open Salon by clicking on the "More" button at the top-right hand corner of every page, pulling down the drop-down menu and clicking "Tippem." More detailed information may be accessed by logging into Revolution MoneyExchange directly. Here, you will be able to see all information pertaining to your account, including: balances and other payments.

What is Google AdSense?

Google AdSense is a quick and easy way to make money from your blog by adding contextually relevant ads to your profile page. Learn more here.

How much money can I make from Google AdSense?

Your revenue will depend on the traffic to your profile page and posts. You may earn more depending on the number of clicks the ads on your blog receive. You will then receive 100 percent of the ads' total revenue.

Where will ads go on my pages?

You can have up to three ads on your page: one in the left-hand column, one between posts, and one in the right-hand column. The layout will look like this:

Can I use my existing Google AdSense account?

Yes. You can use your current Google AdSense? account by selecting your existing account information during the set up process. Open Salon will ensure that your existing account is connected to your Open Salon account.

How can I find out how well my ads are performing?

All information about your ads can be found by logging into your account with Google.

Why are my Google Analytics statistics different from Open Salon's?

You may see discrepancies between your Google information and the "popularity" information on Open Salon because of differences in the way we count our data. Each internet stats counter has its own method for determining how many people have visited a given website -- using time limits to cut out page refreshes, for example, or ignoring certain frame arrangements. -- which can sometimes lead to contradictory results. Because we calculate Open Salon numbers using our server logs, you may notice some differences between Google's numbers and our own.

Can I change the email address associated with my Google AdSense account?

Yes, you can change the information associated with your account by logging in to your account with Google.

I don't want ads on my pages anymore. What do I do?

If you would like to remove Google AdSense from your pages, simply un-check the ad placements in the "Blog Ads" section of "Edit Account."

My account is "pending". What does that mean?
